A small market town in
thne south-west corner of Turkey,Köyceğiz sits on the
northern shore of a huge, freshwater lake among olive
and orange groves, beehives and cotton fields. A quiet
Turkish rather than swinging, international resort,
Köyceğiz's greatest assets are its natural beauty and
wildlife. These centre around the lake, Köyceğiz Gölü,
which the Mediterranean and a wide, sandy turtle beach.
The surrounding area,

landspace, active and less active pursuits. There are
the thermal springs at Sultaniye a boat ride across the
lake; mudbaths, lycian rock tombs and the ancient Carian
city of Caunos further down-channel, and an impressive
range of mountains to explore behind the town.
Further a field, some
60km to the west, is the busy marina resort, Marmaris,
while fethiye, a quieter alternative, lies a two-hour
drive to the east.
